| County Commissioners approved funding for and gave Parks & Recreation permission to apply to the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund for a grant to build a community park next to the Newport Middle School, on 11 acres that were donated by the Board of Education in exchange for improvements to the middle school ball fields. The County was awarded $500,000 in grant funds and began construction in the Fall of 2008 with grading, utilities installation and seeding. The County Health Department contributed fitness stations on the walking trail that were funded by a $20,000 Eat Smart Move More Community Grant. Site Map |
Construction Schedule The County anticipates construction of park amenities as scheduled below. Because of safety concerns none of the park amenities can be made available for use until all construction is complete. As of September 2010 the County anticipates opening the park in April of 2011. |
